Agenda for Meeting at Cyber School

1.CTS Leadership Module assessment

2. Relationship between Leadership and Social Studies(link)Also question three relates to the new social studies curriculum because  if you see Page 24 of the alberta curriculum guide and these two points relate to the project that I am doing on leadership: 4.9 develop strategies to address local, national and global issues that demonstrate individual and collective leadership (C, GC)
4.10 explore opportunities to demonstrate active and responsible citizenship through individual and collective action (C, GC). For more information see  Alberta Social Studies (Local History) http://absocstudies.blogspot.com/?zx=1d6926851e2fe416, St. Albert Issues: A historical Perspective http://saiahp.blogspot.com/.

3. Presentation to School Council and survey results
4. Other element of the project
5. Leadership modules

Presentation to School Council

This Presentation is based on the results of research from other schools , student surveys at our school, and my opinion.

1.Proposal for selecting a student representative for school council

Most of the students surveyed agree that there should be an elected student representative that takes it seriously and not voted in by a popularity contest.

A. Changes to Make Now (next year)

I think that the school council can advertise through announcements, posters, and their blog about the position available to a student to sit on their council. Also, the school council should have a selection process that interviews students who want to be involved. The student that has the best qualities to represent students is selected i.e the student would take school council seriously and want to bring about change.

B
. Changes for the Future:

The student Representative should be elected by the students each year and have to report back to the leadership class and possibly other classes about the changes that are affecting students, discussed by the school council.

2. Suggestions for Administration

A. For Communicating with the student body about Leadership opportunities in the School

Lots of students have stated through their surveys that they do not know a lot about the leadership program as it has been poorly advertised.

a.Changes for Right Now (next year)

The leadership program should be advertised clearly so that students who want to know more or join the program will know what is involved in the class.
Make leadership modules available through outreach and have students practically show leadership by being involved in the community clubs

b. Changes for the Future

- Leadership courses should not be a one semester occurrance . They should run all year and offer 10,20,30 levels separately so that more students can be involved
- Also, you could have an after school group that plans the events for the school. This would allow the leadership class more time to attend leadership conferences, invite special speakers to the class, and learn about prominent leaders of today and their impact on society.

B.Student comments about issues affecting them

a. Change for Right Now ( next year)

Several students have stated in their survey that the new timetables is confusing because of switching block A and B. Also, the times of the blocks are a problem as some days you get 100 min class other days just an hour class so you don't really enjoy the 100 min blocks because they are so long and the 60 min block is too short. Lunch time is not long enough.

b. Changes for the Future

- Make after school activities and trips more affordable so more students can enjoy them
- Make friend requests available for classes when registering
- Re-instate the music program even if it is only after school or leave the band room open and available to students who are interested in music to use at lunch or after school.

Suggestions to Improve Active Sudent Invoment at Spruce Grove Composite High School changes

  1. Make CTS leadership modules available to take through outreach. It could be done by following a similar program as what I have done.ie using the internet and blogger.
  2. make student leadership opportunities known to entire student body i.e announcements, posters excreta
  3. Have student leaders report back to student body or appropriate group i.e . through blogs(see school council blogs), meetings excreta
  4. Involve students in the selection process of student leadership i.e. elected student council, selecting a student representative for school council

Student councils in the Edmonton area

- I searched on google for a website for informations on Student Councils in High Schools I did not find any.

- I search four local High School websites and did not find any detail on how their Student Councils operate.

- From a conversation I know that ESSMY in St. Albert has an elected Student Council.

Questions for other Schools about student leadership here are the results from memorial

1. What types of leadership courses does your school offer if any?
Our school offers leadership 15/ 25/ 35. These classes are offered every second Tuesday from 3:10 - 5:00. The first class starts on Tuesday, September 15. Student Council meets every Monday @ lunch. The two are closely related. Everyone on Council is in Leadership, however, you can take Leadership without being on SC.

2. What types of opportunities for leadership are there available to students?
- student council, leadership conferences

We go on a Team Building Leadership camp (day trip usually to YoWoChAs). Students also have the opportunity to attend the U of A, Provincial and National Leadership conferences. U of A (weekend), Provincial (3 days this year in Edmonton), National (8 days next year in Montreal)

3. How do student leaders interact with student body?
??? Thru activities, events, assemblies, fundraisers

4. How are students involved in the selection process for student council and school council representative?
Everyone is welcome. Co-presidents are elected within the council. Activities, events and projects are chosen by you as Leadership projects. All projects ok'd by advisors, are supported by Council (meaning others on Council will assist in your event.)

We have a large council of about 25 - 30.

Opservations on Current Student Praticipation in Leadership at SGCHS

Spruce Grove Composite High School currently only has students involvement in the school wide leadership through leadership classes - who organize school events such as pajama day

  • There is also student involvement in the school through after school clubs such as sports and Drama.
  • There is no active student body participation in Student Council (I saw a poster last year but that was the only mention of student council that I know of)
  • There is a student representative to School Council .However the student body was not involved in the selection of this representative.
  • There are also representatives to the school board who are not selected by the student body or interact with them
